Fire safety programs begin today in Wichita

Fire Prevention Week observances in Wichita begin today, with a fire safety education fair at Old Cowtown, 1865 Museum Blvd ... The fair, which begins at 9 a.m., will allow area grade school students to learn about fire safety, watch a rescue demonstration and practice an escape out of a smoke-filled room. Students will also be able to tour the sites of Old Cowtown ... All fifth-grade students throughout the city and county and surrounding areas are invited to attend a fire prevention adventure

Officials at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita are getting rid of blue sno-cones after a mix-up involving commercial degreaser ... Four people became ill Thursday when a zoo employee poured a degreasing agent into the sno-cone machine instead of flavored syrup ... The two bottles are the same size, shape and color and accidentally got stocked next to each other. As she helped spruce up Camp Hiawatha's pool house Saturday, Sandra Williams thought of all the giggling, happy children who will splash around there this summer ...
